One of the most important tips I can share is this: photography is all about lighting. Even the most beautiful location can produce average photos if the light isn't ideal, while great lighting can transform an ordinary setting into something extraordinary.
If you're planning an outdoor photo session, I highly recommend scheduling it during the golden hour—the hour shortly after sunrise or before sunset. During this time, the sun is lower in the sky, creating warm, soft, and flattering light that enhances skin tones, reduces harsh shadows, and gives your portraits a timeless, natural look.
If your schedule only allows for a midday session, don't worry. The key is choosing the right location. Look for areas with plenty of natural shade, such as large trees, parks, covered walkways, or buildings that block direct sunlight. Open shade creates much softer, more even lighting, helping you avoid harsh shadows, squinting, and overexposed backgrounds.
Another tip I always recommend is scheduling your session on a weekday whenever possible. Popular parks, beaches, and gardens are usually much less crowded Monday through Thursday than they are on weekends. Fewer people in the background means cleaner, more natural photos and allows us to spend more time focusing on your portraits instead of waiting for crowds to clear. It also reduces the amount of post-processing needed to remove distractions from the background, resulting in a smoother editing process and even better final images.
As a photographer with more than 20 years of experience, I help every client choose the best location, lighting, and timing for their session. These small details make a huge difference and help create beautiful, timeless photographs you'll cherish for generations.
